Mining the Metal-Rich Stars for Planets

We examine the correlation between stellar metallicity and the presence of shortperiod planets. It appears that approximately 1 % of dwarf stars in the solar neighborhood harbor short-period planets characterized by near-circular orbits and orbital periods P < 20 days. However, among the most metal-rich stars (defined as having [Fe/H] > 0.2 dex), it appears that the fraction increases to 10%. U...

The metal - rich nature of stars with planets ⋆

With the goal of confirming the metallicity " excess " present in stars with planetary-mass companions, we present in this paper a high-precision spectroscopic study of a sample of dwarfs included in the CORALIE extrasolar planet survey. The targets were chosen according to the basic criteria that 1) they formed part of a limited volume and 2) they did not present the signature of a planetary h...

Confirming the Metal-Rich Nature of Stars with Giant Planets

With the goal of confirming the metallicity “excess” observed in stars with planetary mass companions, we have conducted a high-precision spectroscopic study of a “comparison” sample of dwarfs included in the CORALIE extra-solar planet survey (Santos, Israelian, & Mayor 2001). The targets were chosen following two basic criteria: they make part of a limited volume and they do not present the si...

Two Jovian-mass Planets in Earthlike Orbits

We report the discovery of two new planets: a 1.94MJup planet in a 1.8 yr orbit of HD 5319, and a 2.51MJup planet in a 1.1 yr orbit of HD 75898. The measured eccentricities are 0.12 for HD 5319b and 0.10 for HD 75898b, and Markov chainMonte Carlo simulations based on the derived orbital parameters indicate that the radial velocities of both stars are consistent with circular planet orbits. With ...
